Transport properties of heavy particles in high Reynolds number turbulence
The statistical properties of heavy particle trajectories in high Reynolds numbers turbulent flow are analyzed. Dimensional analysis assuming Kolmogorov scaling is compared with the result of numerical simulation using a synthetic turbulence advecting field. The relevance of the results obtained in the derivation of Lagrangian transport models is discussed. PACS numbers: 47.27.Qb 47.55.Kf 02.50.Ey
متن کاملInertial clustering of particles in high-Reynolds-number turbulence.
We report experimental evidence of spatial clustering of dense particles in homogenous, isotropic turbulence at high Reynolds numbers. The dissipation-scale clustering becomes stronger as the Stokes number increases and is found to exhibit similarity with respect to the droplet Stokes number over a range of experimental conditions (particle diameter and turbulent energy dissipation rate). These...
متن کاملFinite size corrections to scaling in high Reynolds number turbulence.
We study analytically and numerically the corrections to scaling in turbulence which arise due to the finite ratio of the outer scale L of turbulence to the viscous scale η, i.e., they are due to finite size effects as anisotropic forcing or boundary conditions at large scales. We find that the deviations δζm from the classical Kolmogorov scaling ζm = m/3 of the velocity moments 〈|u(k)|m〉 ∝ km ...
متن کاملHigh–Reynolds Number Wall Turbulence
We review wall-bounded turbulent flows, particularly high–Reynolds number, zero–pressure gradient boundary layers, and fully developed pipe and channel flows. It is apparent that the approach to an asymptotically high– Reynolds number state is slow, but at a sufficiently high Reynolds number the log law remains a fundamental part of the mean flow description. With regard to the coherent motions...
متن کاملHigh Reynolds number effects in wall turbulence
A review of recent discoveries from high Reynolds number studies of turbulent boundary layers is given. The emergent regime of very large-scale structures in the logarithmic region and their subsequent influence on the near-wall cycle challenges many of the previously held assumptions regarding scaling of turbulent boundary layers at high Reynolds numbers. Experimental results are presented to ...
